FILM:
Sophia's debut film Democracy 4 Dummies" is a 45 minute satirical "how to" documentary released in 2008 by the National Film Board of Canada on how to run for office with no money. Born from a budget of only $4800 and a borrowed camera, Sophia wrote, directed, produced, edited, shot, and narrated it.
"Democracy 4 Dummies" follows the campaign of an eccentric Montreal hemp store owner Dylan Perceval-Maxwell, who runs against party leader Gilles Duceppe in his vegetable oil car that's falling apart. In a "Daily Show" style tutorial, viewers laugh as they learn how to run a campaign using nothing but creativity. Candidates flyer with dogs wrapped in signs, and get attention wearing skirts, and become media darlings.
"It is really quite an inspiring little documentary full of pithy political quotes and goofy characters. We live in a remarkable country where anyone with a little gumption can run for political office."(CM Magazine)
Sophia made "Democracy 4 Dummies" through her production company The Man Productions which she founded in 2005 during post production of the film. Sophia now runs the company out of Los Angeles and Montreal.
